About Matcha Insight

Matcha Insight is written from Japan, where good tea is not a luxury import — it is what's on the shelf at the neighborhood shop. That changes how you see the matcha sold overseas: some of it is excellent, some of it is honest but mislabeled, and some of it is expensive powder that would never be called "ceremonial" here.

This site exists to sort one from the other, in plain English, for people buying matcha and Japanese tea outside Japan.

How we review

  • We focus on what you can verify. Origin, harvest, grade labeling, and price per gram — checked against how matcha is actually sold, priced, and labeled here in Japan, not against marketing copy.
  • Living in Japan is our reference point. We compare overseas offerings against what the same money buys from tea shops in Uji, Yame, and Nishio.
  • We name the downsides. Every recommendation includes who it is notfor. No product is right for everyone.

Affiliate disclosure

Some links on this site are affiliate links: if you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This funds the tea we buy for testing. It never decides what we recommend — opinions, rankings, and criticisms are our own. See our fullaffiliate disclosure.
